NEWS: WEDNESDAY 23rd JUNE 2010

OUR NEWEST DANCER

Congratulations to Berdine & Jason on the birth of son Seth who weighed in at 7lb 14oz. It’s only been 2 weeks but already Berdine is itching to get back to Ceroc & Zumba – something to do with nappies? – nah...she’s just missing the buzz.

ZUMBA @ CSD CONTINUES TO GROW
If you haven’t been to one of our Zumba Fitness-Parties yet, you’re really missing out. Come and join the crowd at the most popular classes in Hamilton. We have had an expert come in and amp up the lighting of the stage so it doesn’t matter where you are in the room, you’ll get to see us clearly & larger than life.

Our class fees go back to the usual $8 in July so come and try us while you still only pay $5 (during June).

Jennie’s completing her training on Saturday and will then be licensed to teach on her own, I will be also licensed to teach Zumbatomic (Zumba for kids) after Sunday and with Pienaar packing out his classes and Berdine almost ready to return, there’ll be lots more top classes featuring top Instructors coming your way soon.

Zumba Reminders:

  • If you want to come to the Monday classes, phone to book in as soon as you can or you may miss out – our list can be full by lunch time on Mondays.
  • If you want to order Zumba clothing, here’s the website: www.zumbashop.com.au
  • Our next Sunday class will be 5.30pm on 11th July. No need to book for this and there’ll be a little more instruction at the beginning of each routine to help those who are new to the dances.

    BALLROOM. REINVENTED.
This was a newly choreographed show from Burn The Floor and from all accounts (I was teaching so couldn’t go) it was just as excellent as FloorPlay – the origins of my number plate FLRPLY.

I may not have been able to see the show this year but I was invited to take a bunch of CSD pupils to meet some of the cast, have a look back stage (wow! The costumes!) and do some Cha Cha with them on the stage. The lucky pupils were from the block groups I arranged and had their names drawn out of a hat. Quite apart from being some of the World’s greatest dancers, the cast are wonderful people – friendly, fun loving and full of life. It was an amazing experience and we were all blown away by the fact that they had put this time aside for us just 2 hours before the show was to start.

YOU. BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE.
Most of you who went to the show would have been inspired and come away wanting to be able to dance just like them. A number of you would have been a little intimidated by the sheer force of their passion and charisma. In reality, very few dancers ever get to achieve that level of performance, most of you can be great dancers but absolutely all of you can be the best you can be.

    Where to start:

  • The same place we all did – in a class for Beginners. The next one is starting at 8.30pm on Tuesday 20th July. Bookings can be made now. Or if you already have some experience:
  • There are classes running in all levels, both social and medals that you could join.
  • If there is enough interest, we are looking at starting a Gold Latin class at 8.00pm on Tuesday 20th July. Let me know as soon as you can if you want to join this group.

    NEED MORE INSPIRATION?
The Hamilton Amateur Dance Club are holding their Annual Dance Festival (Ballroom & Latin competition) at Fraser High School on Saturday 10th July. As this comp is being held just 2 weeks before the NZ National Champs, the chances are you’ll get to see some of NZ’s top dancers. To see all the details, go to www.dancesportnz.com

  • NEWS: SUNDAY 30th MAY 2010

    GOT THE WINTER BLUES?

Perfect! That’s exactly the right colour to wear to our next Mainly Ceroc Dance Party. What? You thought I meant are you feeling blue? Huh! We’re dancers! How can you be depressed when you’re dancing?

ZUMBA CLASSES ARE JUST FIVE BUCKS
Yes! For the whole month of June you pay just $5 per class for Zumba. Now that will give you rosy cheeks (and neck, legs, arms.....) plus you’ll save on heating bills. Get off the couch, put on your brightest t-shirt and join the party!!

THE QUEEN GIVES YOU A DAY OFF WORK
But you don’t have to give up your Ceroc or Zumba fix because those classes are still running on the Monday night.

WE BRING YOU A VERY SPECIAL DANCE PARTY
On Friday 11th June. You won’t want to miss it so put it in your diary now - more details will be sent to you shortly.

BURN THE FLOOR COMES TO TOWN
Tuesday 15th June, 7.30pm, Founders Theatre.

I have 42 tickets put aside of which 28 have already been snapped up. These are ‘A’ Reserve tickets and are only $69 (normally $79). Also....you’ll go in a draw to win a Cha Cha lesson with the cast....wow!!!!

If you don’t know anything about this show, have a look at their website here and if you want to join us, contact me as soon as you can or you could miss out. Do you know someone having a birthday in June? This would make a fantastic gift.

    IT’S WINTER SOLSTICE MONTH
Monday 21st June is the shortest day this year and that can only mean.....the sun’s going to start its journey back south again real soon.

    NEWS: WEDNESDAY 5th MAY 2010

    GET SMART

Didn’t the Ceroc Team do a great demo at the Heroes & Villains party? Once again Ailene & Brett choreographed a very entertaining piece with great use of musicality. You can have another look at it (and photos from the night) by clicking here.

We have another Team routine starting on Tuesday 25th May at 8.00pm. As with previous ones, the moves will be at a level that absolute beginners will be able to master but anyone of any level can be part of the Team. You’ll need to book in of course and if you don’t have a partner, we’ll see what we can do for you.

    DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
Many of you were inspired by seeing Brett & Ailene dance this beautiful Rumba at the party so we can now announce that our new course teaching the *Cha Cha * Samba * Rumba * Paso Doble * Jive for beginners is definitely starting on Tuesday 25th May at 6.45pm. This course will start off teaching the lead and follow of popular moves for social use and will then move on to cool routines with fancy moves. Strictly Latin courses don’t start very often so make sure you don’t miss out – book now!

    SUPERGIRL
We had quite a few at the party as you know but we also had an EXTRA SUPER girl dance at our medal tests on Sunday. Ceroc teacher Marion was awarded with 100% for every one of her four Silver Bar Latin dances. That’s a fantastic (and very rare) achievement so huge congratulations to Marion and a big pat on the back to her teachers Ailene & Brett as well.

We are currently looking at starting new Gold Latin routines so if you’ve previously achieved Silver Bar and want to join this class, give me a call. The day & time of the course aren’t know yet so just register your interest at this point.

    SUPER PRACTICE OPPORTUNITY
To provide you with the opportunity to hone your skills before the May Winter Ball, we’re moving our Mainly Ballroom dance party forward to Friday 21st May. Come and practice your * Ballroom * Latin * New Vogue (and a little bit of) * Ceroc, catch up with old friends and make some new ones. If you’re there by 8.00pm I’ll even teach you the Gypsy Tap. $10 per person, minimum of smart casual dress code please.

    CEROC SPINS & DIPS CLASS
For those of you who need to learn how to do double speed spins (free & assisted) and the supported dips & drops (seducer style), there will be a special class teaching these techniques upstairs on Monday 17th May at 8.30pm. These are the techniques you need to know before moving up to Intermediate level so it will suit Beginner Plus dancers. The class is free if you attend a normal Ceroc class on the night otherwise, $14 each. There’s no need to book – just turn up.

QUE TE MUEVE (what moves you)? ZUMBA!! Woohoo!!
There’s one heck of a lot of movin’ & shakin’ going on that’s for sure. By popular (brow-beating) request, Sunday workshop classes are going to be more regular but still intermittent. Have a read of the info by clicking here and you’ll see the details of our next Sunday workshops.

You’ll also read that you can come to our Monday class casually but you need to phone & book in on the day due to restricted numbers.

Also; just a note that if you attend our Wednesday class, you can join in any time after it starts. You don’t have to wait until 6.00pm if you get there earlier.

    NEWS: FRIDAY 9th APRIL 2010

    IT’S ABOUT TIME TOO!

Our heartiest congratulations go to Ceroc teacher Dave Bevan and his (at last) fiancée Anne Ryborg on their engagement (which will probably be the shortest in history). Dave and Anne are getting married in just a couple of weeks and are then spending their honeymoon building houses in Samoa for Habitat For Humanity. All the best for a long and happy future together you two – that’s a fantastic way to start it.

    WE’RE BEING STRIPPED
No, not like that. Our clubrooms are being emptied of everything to prepare for being taken over for the V8’s. That includes the jugs & glasses so when you come to workshops and classes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, please bring a water bottle or mug.

    SPINS, DIPS, DROPS & LAYBACKS
As there are a few of you who want to learn these techniques but can’t make the workshops this Sunday, I will be incorporating the moves into the Intermediate Ceroc classes on the next two Mondays and teaching you how to perform them safely.

    CAN’T GET ENOUGH ZUMBA?
Next week of course we only have the Monday and Tuesday classes but.....our first Wednesday back (21st) we’re going to add half an hour to the Wednesday Zumba class. You can start at 5.30pm and do up to an hour and a half (you devils) or join in at 6.00pm and do your normal one hour workout. It will still only cost you $8....wow!

In another few weeks the 5.30pm Monday non-casual class will be pretty much up to the speed of our casual classes so if you want an extra night of Zumba, put your name on the waiting list for this class.

    DO YOU WANT......

  • an Advanced Ceroc (including aerials) class?
  • a Ceroc course for couples?
  • a Blues Style Ceroc class?
  • a Swing Style Ceroc class?
  • a Ceroc Triples class?
  • a Jango (Modern Jive & Tango fusion) course?
  • a Latin American (Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive) course?
  • an American Style Tango course?
  • a New Vogue (Swing Waltz, Tangoette, Merrilyn, Gypsy Tap) course?
  • anything else you can think of?

If there is enough interest in any of these I will start a class for you. Please let me know as soon as you can.

  • NEWS: WEDNESDAY 31st MARCH 2010

ATE TOO MANY EASTER EGGS (or bunnies)?

Well you’ll be really pleased to know that we still have Ceroc classes on Easter Monday. Did you know that 30-40 minutes of dance delivers about the same fitness benefits as a low impact aerobics class? Yup – apparently so. Imagine what an hour of Ceroc is going to do for you then. There is a huge amount of documented evidence regarding the health benefits of dancing and we’ve put some of the more interesting articles on our website on the stuff! page (click here).

HOW TO BECOME A GREAT CEROC DANCER
In our Ceroc Workshops we pass on to you the knowledge we have gained through our experience of many years teaching Ceroc and training champion dancers. We have another set of Workshops scheduled for Sunday 11th April. Check out the details regarding the times and what we cover in each Workshop on our website (click here) and don’t forget....YOU NEED TO BOOK FOR THESE.

WE DON’T HAVE TO MOVE FOR THE V8’s – yay!
We’ve been advised that we can continue classes as usual except Wednesday 14th & Thursday 15th April. So we won’t bother moving, we’ll just have those two nights off.

    ‘BIG BOSSY BOOTS’ #3 & #4
Congratulations to Pienaar Piso and Rochelle Andrews who recently completed their training and are now fully Licensed Zumba Instructors. And no, they’re not at all bossy – they’re another couple of ZUMBA PARTY ANIMALS!! Read all about them on our website (click here).

    ANOTHER ZUMBA WORKSHOP
We had fantastic feedback about how useful the last one was and have been asked to schedule them regularly. The next Workshop has been organised for 5.30pm Sunday 11th April and the cost will be $8 each. Over the 2 hours you will be taken through all of our current routines, shown how to do the basic steps and given advice on how to get the most out of each piece. There won’t be any need to book for this workshop; just turn up and bring all those friends you’ve been trying to get to join the party.

HOW TO BECOME A GREAT SOCIAL DANCER
A new course for absolute beginners is starting 7.15pm Wednesday 21st April. We’ll teach you the most popular of the social dances – Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Waltz & Salsa or Ceroc (class choice) plus really useful things like how to lead/follow, how to listen to the music, dance floor etiquette...heaps of excellent stuff. You definitely need to book for this course (especially if you need for us to organise a partner for you) so you’d better HOP TO IT THEN!

    ALREADY KNOW THE BASICS?
If you already know how to dance a basic Foxtrot, Waltz, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba & Jive (no matter how rusty) you might like to join our Dance Club. There has been enough interest shown for us to be able to start this up again and it will be doing so at 8.30pm Wednesday 21st April. In this class you will get to practice & consolidate what you already know, learn new moves in those dances and even learn new dances including some New Vogue ones (Gypsy Tap, Merrilyn etc). You need to book for this class.

    NEWS: WEDNESDAY 10th MARCH 2010

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CANCER STOMPING DANCERS (CSD)

Stephen, Nick, Sam, Hazel, Marion, Lesley, Christine, David, Linda, Sandra, Jen & Ann-Marie raised around $2,500 for the Cancer Society by participating in Relay For Life. We all had a fantastic weekend camping, walking in groups around the track & dressing up for the theme laps. This was our first Relay but we decided we want to participate next year as well so hopefully you’ll join us - we now know what we need for it to be maximum fun.

    CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RAFFLE WINNERS

All of the goodies in the baskets were donated by the CSD Team so that every cent went to the Cancer Society. The winners of the three baskets were Lynley Forbes, Rod Shelton and Des Vercoe.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CEROC JACK & JILL WINNERS

Our last dance party incorporated the 2010 Ceroc Intermediate Jack & Jill competition. We were entertained by an awesome group of dancers who of course are all winners just for having the guts to get out there and give it a go. Sadly though, only one Jack & one Jill can take home the trophies. They were Sherie Harrison and Kerry Weston.

    WHY CEROC IS SO SPECIAL

Having spent years in the very disciplined and rigid world of competition ballroom and latin dancing, the thing that attracted me most to Ceroc was it’s total lack of restrictions. Ceroc is the only partner dance in the world that I know of where you have total freedom of movement, timing & character. You don’t stick to a rhythm (like Salsa), you don’t stick to a character (like Rock & Roll) and you don’t stick to an alignment (like West Coast Swing).

Don’t feel you have to dance Ceroc moves exactly as you were taught them – relax & try to feel the music; move around and make up your own version. The only rules are:

    1. YOU MUST NOT HURT YOUR PARTNER so be careful when trying something different.
    2. Men: DON’T DANCE MOVES ABOVE THE LEVEL OF YOUR LADY PARTNER.
    3. Ladies: to stay safe, ALWAYS TAKE YOUR BODY THE SAME WAY AS THE MAN’S TAKING YOUR HAND.

    ZUMBA UPDATE

Our Zumba classes are as popular as ever and we’re thinking that with the temperatures dropping, many more people will be choosing Zumba as their exercise of choice for the winter. To be sure we don’t get too over-crowded, we’re looking at putting on extra classes and are presently asking pupils what days and times you’d like for classes. Please let us know your preferences and we’ll try to give you what you want.

We’ve made a 10 class concession card available so you don’t have to bring money with you each time you come and you get a 10% discount – that’s just $7.20 per class.

    SOCIAL DANCE UPDATE

If you have previously completed the first 6 weeks of a social dance course or know how to dance the basics of the Waltz & Foxtrot (no matter how rusty you are), you might want to join in with the current course who are continuing on to their second 6 weeks. The group will be practicing and consolidating what’s been learnt already, learn new moves in both of those dances and will also start learning the Cha Cha and Salsa. Further down the track will be Quickstep and other useful social dances.

If you want to join this group, please phone me as soon as you can because the next 6 week block starts next Tuesday (16th) at 8.30pm. This email address may be out of action for a week from this Friday (12th) so it would be best to phone just in case.

A new course for absolute beginners will be starting shortly. I’ll send you out a notice as soon as the day and time has been scheduled.
