Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to Christine Simmons Dance...
And thank you for choosing us to introduce you to this wonderful social sport called dancing. We are going to take you on a journey of discovery that will be the most fun you can have exercising and you'll meet the nicest bunch of people to be found anywhere. If this sounds like what you had in mind, put on some comfy shoes and let us open up a whole new wonderful world to you...

Almost everyone considering the leap into social dancing classes has a few questions. We've heard and answered pretty much all of them at CSD over the years, especially questions such as...

What if I've never danced before? - I've got two left feet you know.
Perfect. Our Beginner classes are formatted on the assumption that nobody coming into the class has danced before - so you'll fit right in.

I don't have a partner - who's going to dance with me?
If you don’t have your own partner it is best to book into courses as soon as they’re advertised. We will then put you on our ‘partner required’ list and will do our best to get you dancing. It is very rare for us not to be able to provide a dance partner but the sooner you put your name down, the closer you are to the top of the list..

What age is everyone else that comes?
We have a huge range from 13 to over 60. It's really only the over 60's who have experienced dance as a part of normal social life and learnt to dance from mums and aunties - the rest of us missed out on that fabulous era and now come to organised classes to learn the skills.

What do I wear? - I can't afford those flash dance shoes.
Expensive shoes don't make you a better dancer, but they are usually more comfortable. Start with whatever you have in your wardrobe even if it's just runners. Leather or composite soles are best but you can always have leather glued onto the soles of your existing comfy shoes (even runners). Invest in better shoes later when you know you'll get the value from them. As for clothes, anything that allows you to move well. Layers are good because you'll want to start peeling off as you warm up in the class.

Can I come and watch first? - I like to know what I'm getting myself into.
Absolutely - please do. The only classes we don’t allow spectators is any Beginner dance class or any Zumba® class. This is totally for the comfort of the people in these classes.

Do I have to bring my own refreshments? - It's sounds like thirsty work.
We always have jugs of water and glasses for you to help yourself to for free. Bottled water, sports drinks, soft drinks and snacks are available for purchase and at the end of your class you might like to relax with a drink from our licensed bar.

Is there parking nearby? I don't like walking around the streets on my own at night.
There is usually ample free parking under security lighting right outside the door. When you arrive you can expect others to be arriving at the same time. When you leave, if you are on your own or worried, just ask a staff member to watch you to your vehicle.

So when I start getting good at this, where do I go to use it?
Like I promised, we will be opening up a whole new world to you. You will find yourself becoming part of a group that arranges to meet at places where the music and ambience are conducive to the style of dance you are learning. You will be amazed at how many dancers are out there and how many great venues there are for dancing.

Our studio has regular dance parties which are usually held on Friday nights. Everyone is welcome to come to our parties and it's a great time to introduce that person you've been trying to convince to come to classes. We usually offer a mini class beforehand to give you a routine you can dance on the night. All of the dances we teach in classes will be allotted floor time at our parties. REMEMBER: Every teacher and pupil started out just like you!
